Modesty Dept: Shades of Solitude

The Modesty Department's debut album is like a soundtrack to an imaginary movie, full of images and emotions spanning the gap from melancholy to mischief. Songwriter Jonas Persson starts out in electronica and continues on a voyage of discovery through jazz and pop from the 1960s to the present, inspired by everything from Kraftwerk to Brian Wilson and Air.

The fragile melodies are driven alternately by lo-fi vocoders and beautiful female voices, and the background bubbles with everything from mellotrons and old synthesizers to languishing strings and backward flutes. All this in order "not to make it too easy for the listener," according to Jonas Persson. Concentration is vital, in other words.

Jonas Persson is a 28-year-old songwriter and producer from Skellefteå, Sweden, who was a founding member of the Lounge/Nu Jazz-project Funkservice International. "Shades of Solitude" is his first solo release, an apt title for this first foray out on his own.
